Protecting Conversion Through App-Icon Testing
How Eyecon prevented an app-icon redesign from reducing retained-installer performance by up to 20%.

Strategic Creative Validation
Eyecon, a leading communication utility app, sought to optimize its presence in the Pakistani market by evaluating its visual brand assets. The goal was to determine if localized or more striking color palettes could drive higher engagement and conversion rates on the Google Play Store.
The Risk of Visual Novelty
While the established Eyecon icon was blue, the team developed several alternative concepts including red, green, and black variations. These alternatives appeared visually distinctive and potentially more relevant to the local market; however, rolling them out without empirical validation posed a significant risk to conversion stability in a high-volume region.
The experiment compared the baseline blue icon against four distinct variations: Green, Red, Solid Black, and a Black-phone variation, specifically measuring their impact on retained installers.
Data-Driven Icon Experimentation
We executed two high-volume, controlled experiments in the Pakistan market to isolate the impact of icon color on user behavior.
Rather than focusing solely on clicks, the study prioritized retained-installer performance to ensure that the creative changes supported long-term user acquisition quality.
Performance intervals and confidence levels were calculated for every variant to ensure that any decision to move away from the baseline was backed by definitive data.
Key Performance Insights
The red icon showed the most significant decline in the larger test group.
The green variant consistently underperformed the blue baseline across both tests.
The existing blue icon's familiarity and brand recognition proved more valuable than the visual novelty of the alternatives. Even the best-performing alternative, the black-phone icon, still resulted in a 6.4% performance drop.
Protecting the Bottom Line
The experiment successfully prevented Eyecon from replacing a high-performing asset with variants that would have reduced performance by 6% to 20%.
The baseline blue icon was declared the definitive winner with a 99% statistical confidence level, removing all ambiguity from the creative direction.
By testing before deployment, Eyecon protected its conversion pipeline in a critical market, proving that newer or bolder designs are not always better.
The Value of Negative Results
Experimentation creates value not only by finding winning variants but also by preventing damaging changes. Creative redesigns should never be rolled out based on aesthetics alone. At Alchemy Avenue, we validate every creative change against commercial performance to ensure our clients only deploy what works.
